13 Sociology of the Latino
Instructor: Carlos Ramos
Course Information: This course will examine the contemporary conditions of Latinas and Latinos in the United States, with particular attention to their socio-economic experience in Los Angeles. The course materials emphasize the importance of race, class, and gender in structuring their experiences. We will focus on processes such as immigration, poverty, and social movements as well as institutions such as education and labor markets and the extent and nature of Latino participation in each. More importantly, we will explore the causes and consequences of these processes and institutions to better understand the present status of Latinos in the U.S.
