Procedure and Instructions for New Distance Learning
Instructors at LBCC
(updated
10-19-2010)
1. Discuss with your Department Chair / Dean the need for the online course you plan on teaching and how it fits in the department strategic DL course offerings plan. Obtain your Chair's approval as well as the semester in which you are expected to be assigned to teach it. Check if existing DL course environment exists with the department so you don't have to develop the course from scratch. The average time it takes to design a new DL course from scratch is at least one or two semesters.
2. Review the resources available for online instructors on the Distance Education Web site and the Instructional Technology Development Center (ITDC) Web site to learn about other resources and tools available for you and how you team-up with the ITDC staff to develop your course..
3. Training: Participate in the LBCC Teach Online Seminar offered every semester. Check the ITDC workshop schedule for the next scheduled seminar. This seminar is conducted mainly online, except for 4 on-campus meetings. You will need to obtain an e-Learning Zone account to access the seminar. This seminar addresses both theoretical and practical information on online course design principles and methodologies, as well as delivery strategies and logistical/administrative procedures specific to LBCC. The seminar also includes information and support in case the course you are assigned to needs to be approved (new courses) or reviewed (during the course review process) by the Curriculum Committee.
4. You are welcome to use the development stations at the Instructional Technology Development Center (LAC, L-142 and PCC, LL-124) to design your course pages. Educational Technology experts are available to assist and support you at the FRC; no need for an appointment unless otherwise recommended.
5. During the training you will create an educationally sound DL course that you will use to teach the class. At least a month before your course begins, schedule a meeting with the Director of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning and bring your course folder with you. After this meeting, you will provided with remote access to the your course folder on the LBCC instructional server. If you plan on using a course that is hosted by a publisher or other commercial services, please bring the access information and any other necessary materials to this meeting.
6. Check the LBCC e-course schedule to ensure your course is listed appropriately on it. Contact the Wendi Lopez, DL Program Specialist at the DL Office if anything needs to be added/changed on the schedule.
Contact us if you have any questions or comments, and thank you for your interest in teaching DL courses at LBCC.
